Niagara
Falls - Illuminated Attractions
To see the Niagara Falls illuminated at
night is like leaving in the
dream. You have to experience it in order to fully understand this
description.
The first large attempt to illuminate
Niagara Falls at night was during
the visit in 1860 of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later to become
King Edward VII of England. This was before the age of electricity, so
what were known as bengal Lights were placed below the cliff across
from the American Falls, beside the Horseshoe Falls and behind the
Cataract itself.
In 1925 twenty four great carbon arc lamps were turned on producing
1,320,000,000 candlepower. Than in 1955 after long investigation and
much comparison, 24 new carbon arc lights were ordered producing
4,220,000,000 candlepower and cost $153,000.
Today, the Falls receives funding from both sides of the border, to
ensure nightly, year-round illumination.
