Niagara-on-the-Lake
Historic Niagara-on-the-Lake, the
"Prettiest Town in Canada" was the First Capital of Upper
Canada. World renowned scenic splendor, unique character and rich
history, as well as diversity of heritage and culture contribute to
make beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake
the destination of choice for many visitors
each year.
Niagara-on-the-Lake
is a very special place and one of the most
historically significant regions in Canada. You can't throw a stone
without hitting a landmark in this small town.
Did you
know that after the Great Depression, Niagara-on-the-Lake was
cheaper to live in than St. Catharines?
Because the town was so poor,
there was very little construction in town during '50's, and many old
buildings were left alone. New residents wisely recognized these
landmarks and made them the town's focal point. In a way, poverty saved
the town long enough for those with money and foresight to start
restoring it.

The clock
tower was built as a memorial to local residents killed during the
first world war.

Each year at this site Remembrance Day ceremonies
take place. In June Polish descendants honour the Polish
soldiers
who trained here in the Niagara-on-the-Lake by placing a wreath at the
base of
the tower as part of their annual pilgrimage.
